Steeped in history and offers breathtaking views across Clew Bay
Croagh Patrick is a mountain located approximately 5 miles from the picturesque town of Westport which is 20 minutes from Castlebar in County Mayo.
Considered the holiest mountain in Ireland, this majestic peak, also known locally as the 'Reek' stands 750 metres or 2,500 feet tall and dominates the Mayo landscape.
Its name originates from Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. It was on the summit of the mountain that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD and the custom has been faithfully handed down from generation to generation.
Croagh Patrick is Mayo's most versatile natural resource with many varying activities taking place on the mountain year round. From being a very challenging part of adventure races, a place held reverently as a holy mountain of pilgrimage, as well as assisting to fund many worthwhile charitable causes with numerous charity climbs taking place each year.
Each year, close to one million pilgrims and visitors make the tough trek to the top to pray, as part of races, charity climbs, to participate in Mass, do penance or just to enjoy the spectacular view.
