Undoubtedly one of Ireland's best loved heritage attractions
Westport House is by far one of the West of Ireland’s best-known heritage attractions and can truly lay claim to the title of one of the finest examples of an historical country house in Mayo if not Ireland.
With many rooms on show, visitors can lose themselves in life as far back as the 16th century a time when Grace O’Malley better known as the Pirate Queen of Connacht ruled the land and seas around West Coast. The house is built upon the foundations of one of Grace O'Malley's many castles where it is possible to still tour in the dungeons. The original Westport House was built in 1650 by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, Grace O’Malley’s great-great-granddaughter.
Today Westport house begins a new journey under the ownership of the Hughes Brothers from Westport with great plans in place to ensure Westport House retains its place as the jewel in Mayo's crown.
